Showroom Design Inspiration: Eric and Eloise

Elizabeth Bowen once wrote,

"Again Christmas: abiding point of return. Set apart by its mystery, mood and magic, the season seems in a way to stand outside of time. All that is dear, that is lasting, renews its hold on us: we are home again."

These were the words our creative team kept returning to as they developed the look and mood of the holiday story to be on display during the summer market season. The words, part of a larger essay on the holiday season, seemed to encompass all that the season brings to life in the hearts of many.

It further inspired the team to cling to the idea of lightness and darkness at play together, the quiet mystery of wintry scenes, and the return journey home.

At its heart, the story showcases a child's tale about a fox, Eloise, and a hare, Eric, two unsuspecting friends that relish in the innocence of imagination and the joy of being home again. Illustrated by our creative consultant, Jessica Hiemstra, the concept brings a quiet playfulness to the magnificence of winter, and the clean whites of our new holiday pieces.

The following illustrations are used as larger than life storybook displays in the showroom, serving as a playful backdrop to the holiday collection.

With a modern spin on holiday display houses, candle holders, and christmas trees, the 2016 holiday collection sings of minimal shapes, Scandinavian-inspired design, and moody neutrals.

Join Our Holiday Instagram Challenge - Win $100

Last month, we held our first Instagram style challenge, and it was a wonderful success. A lot of you requested that we keep them coming, so since we have four showroom stories this year, we decided we'd host four Instagram style challenges, and the next one up is Eric and Eloise, our holiday story.

At its heart, the story showcases a child's tale about a fox, Eloise, and a hare, Eric, two unsuspecting friends that relish in the innocence of imagination and the joy of being home again. Illustrated by our creative consultant, Jessica Hiemstra, the story brings a quiet playfulness to our 2016 holiday collection and breathes life into the idea of winter itself - a time of magic.

We see winter as the darkest of seasons, yet always illuminated and hopeful. So with that, we challenge our followers to design a floral arrangement or styled look that plays with the contrast of light and dark. Think minimalism, Scandinavian-inspired design, and wintery, moody tones.

2016 Holiday Ornaments from Accent Decor

One of the glorious things about being on the wholesale side of things is that we get to see Christmas decorations way in advance, and it's hard to be a miser around the office when faced with such pretty things early in the year.

So it was only a matter of time until we decided to make a huge effort to expand our holiday line.

One of the ways we did that was by introducing more unique ornaments to our collection. At Accent Decor, we strive to bring unique decor items that stand out from the basics, and we're really excited to share these Christmas tree ornaments with you as they've been a true delight for us to design, source and photograph for you.

So without further ado, here's a glance at the newest ornaments from Accent Decor:

#AccentDecorAfrica Winning Designs

The results are in! Last month we announced that we would be giving $1000 to two business owners who design something outstanding for our #AccentDecorAfrica Instagram Style Challenge as we prepare to release a ton of new African-inspired products and design our showroom with Africa in mind.

The challenge?  Participants had to create a floral arrangement and/or styled look inspired by Africa, and goodness did our followers go above and beyond.

Best Floral Arrangement

First up was Stacy of Stacy K. Floral in Rochester, NY. She submitted quite a few entries, but the winning design was the following which she happened to create in our maven vase.

"The branching was our favorite part," says Stacy. "We love to mix textures in a way that is organic yet creates visual interest. The rest of the arrangement was built around the use of the branches, the rich orange and yellow palette, and accents of tropical leaves painted gold for a little modern glam."

Judging for best floral design was our floral director, Joyce Mason-Monheim.

"The overall visual balance draws you into this design. The tactile appeal of all the different textures of materials from fresh flowers to dried branches and pods provides tremendous contrast," says Joyce. "The dramatic curvilinear line movements radiate from a strong focal area that in turn pulls the elements all together for a comfortable feel."

Best Styled Look

The winner for best styled look comes from Honeysuckle Events who's desert palette won our product stylist over in a heart beat.

"I really loved how Honeysuckle Events used different pieces to portray Africa. The mood of the photo caught my eye as well as the textures used. Our Modern Artifacts story for the showroom this year is all about texture and this definitely shows it," says Morgan. "Then come to find out there was an entire shoot around it really impressed me! It came together so beautifully from the flowers, to the model, to the detail photos. It portrayed simplicity yet was so bold + colorful!"

photos by Sarah D'AmbraFor the shoot, Shelley of Honeysuckle Events was inspired to create something a little different from the coastal weddings she usually does with photographer Sarah D'Ambra. 'I love doing styled shoots because it allows me to have total creative freedom; I have an idea and I run with it," says Shelley. I knew that i wanted to do several floral arrangements including a really large headdress, which I hadn't attempted yet. I [also] wanted to include some flowers that are native to Africa, so I started with Protea, using the banksia, pincushion, and queen varieties." Other flowers and botanicals used were Matsumoto, Brunia, Waxflower, hanging Amaranthus, as well as scavenged plants from her neighborhood such as holly berries, yucca buds, and yellow seed clusters."I love fashion and interior design almost as much as I love flowers. There was a zebra print covered book that popped up in so many home interior photos, I decided I had to have it," says Shelley on the book in the winning photograph. "It's called "I Married Adventure," detailing the lives o adventurers and documentary film makers Martin and Osa Johnson - the perfect focal piece of which to build my shoot around."Want to see more work by Honeysuckle Events? Showroom Design Inspiration: Modern Artifacts

In April, we shared a little bit about the brainstorming process of our creative team when putting together the showroom looks, but we want to deep dive a little bit deeper and share with you the mood boards we created and some of the product that inspired one of our showroom stories.

So first up, we're sharing our African-inspired Story: Modern Artifacts.

The pieces we've chosen for this story have a found look about them, like treasures hidden for generations, buried beneath the rubble, just waiting to be dusted off and displayed once again. Inspired by the diversity from the continent of Africa, we've added a lot of pieces with ancient designs reborn into modern shapes, and we've paired them with bold colors, gold accents, and patterns to bring the look full-circle as a collected, well traveled display of modern artifacts.
