Accent Decor Gives Back

“What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal” – Albert Pike

Most of you probably know that Accent Decor is passionate about giving back to the community, both locally and globally. We firmly believe in the importance of remembering and serving those who have need out of our abundance. Because all of you are such a big part of our team, we wanted to make sure you know all the different ways that we are involved in giving back, and hope you might be inspired to get involved too!

Founded in 1986 by the Junior League of Atlanta and located in the North Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Atlanta Children’s Shelter provides free, quality day care, emotional support, an educational curriculum for homeless children, and focused social services for their families. Dedicated to helping families overcome the issues that contribute to homelessness, including domestic violence and job loss, the Atlanta Children’s Shelter focuses on the long term self sufficiency of the family – which sets us apart from other Atlanta homeless shelters. Since 1986, the Atlanta Children’s Shelter has cared for almost 8,000 children and provided services for more than 5,000 families.

The Atlanta Mission is the city’s largest and longest-running provider of services to homeless men, women and children. Established in 1938, Atlanta Mission provides emergency shelter, temporary shelter, recovery programming, job attainment and transitional housing for more than 1,000 men, women and children daily.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank was founded in 1979, and procures over 45 million pounds of food and groceries each year and distributes it to more than 600 nonprofit partner agencies serving families and individuals in 29 metro Atlanta and north Georgia counties.

Blueprint 58 is a community-based mentoring program in the Adair Park and Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Atlanta. Blueprint 58 is unique in its approach to community development, focusing on both fostering mentoring relationships through the local school, and establishing a healthy and positive presence in the neighborhood. Blueprint 58 seeks to raise up a new generation of leaders from the community by fostering transformational relationships, providing a safe haven for neighborhood kids, bettering educational opportunities, and fighting for justice.

EnAble of Georgia is an organization that supports people with special needs to lead fulfilled lives – physically, intellectually, and socially. They provide a variety of programs and services to accomplish this task. A member of the EnAble family, Abbie, worked at Accent Decor for years and is now spending her retirement painting.

As a holiday gift this year, Accent Décor was able to donate $250 for each of our top 100 customers totaling $25,000 to Doctors Without Borders. This group was doing the most effective work to halt the ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, West Africa. While Doctors Without Borders works to stop the Ebola, Margaret (our co-owner) has been working with her sister Jo Kuyvenhoven and her husband George Hope to feed the hungry during lookdown. We have been able to feed a village of 800, and orphanage, a leper colony, and one of our employee’s family who lives in Sierra Leone.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is another cause close to our hearts, as our co-owner, Margaret Hofland, has lived with MS for more than 20 years. The National MS Society’s vision is a world free of MS. The Society’s mission is to mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

Family, friends, and coworkers all help support the race for a cure by walking or biking with their local chapter every year.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this look at some of these inspiring organizations. Accent Decor is always expanding our partnerships with local and global organizations, so keep following us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for updates on the work we’re doing!
