One of the most talked about projects in this January’s showroom design, was the white frame wall that we created in our desk/cafe areas at each market. So many of you asked us to share with you how to create this look on your own. Look no further.
Today, we will walk you through, step by step, how we sourced, arranged, and built this white frame wall, with ease!
1/4” Glass Drill Bit (Do not go over 2000rpm)
8/32” x 1-5/8” Eye Bolt (qty. 10)
11/32” Rubber Grommet (qty. 10)
50lb. Gorilla hook (qty. 10)
1 Spray Water Bottle (Used when drilling holes)
1 // STAGE YOUR FRAMES | Before you get started with anything in this project, you will want to know where your end result will be hanging. Then, based on that space, you can decide the shape, size, and feel of your frame gallery. I highly suggest laying the frames out on the ground exactly as you would like them to appear on the wall. Make sure that your frame sizes are varying (try not to put 2 similar frames next to each other) and also, do not be too concerned with being symmetrical.
2 // LAYOUT PRODUCT | Once you have your frames laid out, you will want to place your vases within the frames to figure out what arrangement feels best for you. The frames and vases above were chosen ensuring that the frames would be large enough to hold the vases we picked out for the project. If you vary from the list above, be sure to confirm that the vases or frames you substitute follow this guideline as well.
3 // PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL | The frames we choose were hand selected based on their varying details. We tried to include a wide range of shapes (rectangles, square, oval, etc…), sizes, and styles (ornate vs sleek). When you are laying out your frames, try to ensure that any frames that are butting up to another, are different enough that they will stand out, and create the overall eclectic feel of the gallery wall.
4 // DRILL AND PREP THE VASES | This step is the one that will take the most time and effort. Drilling through the vases must be done carefully, in order to not crack the product. It is completely doable, but make sure that you do it right! Using the above suggested drill bit and speed, carefully begin to make a hole in the top center of each vase. Drilling the hole takes time. Be sure to use the water bottle to keep the vase surface wet and cool. If it is easier for you, feel free to grab a partner to assist with this step.
5 // HANG AND LEVEL THE FRAMES | While following the layout you have already made of your frame wall, you will want to start placing the frames on the gallery area you have selected. Depending on the size and weight of the frames, you will need to choose what would work best for you. For the frames that we selected, any average sized nail or screw will work great. Most importantly, you will want to use a level to ensure that your frames hang evenly. Make sure to spend some time getting this part right, as it will greatly effect the overall look of the gallery wall.
6 // HANG THE VASES | Once you have your holes drilled, you will insert the grommet and eye hook into the hole securely. You will then want to align the gorilla hook in the center of the frame, and place it towards the top of the frame opening. Next, hang the eye hook on the gorilla hook and ensure that all pieces fit secure.
Voila! You now have yourself an incredibly classy conversation piece.
Thank you all so much for the lovely feedback on the frame wall. I hope that this tutorial is helpful in allowing you to recreate the look in your own shop, office, or home!
